What is a roof truss?

The prefabricated triangle that replaced the rafter on most new houses: engineered, plated, delivered by crane, and never, ever to be cut.

Roof trussa prefabricated structural frame, most often of dimension lumber joined with pressed metal connector plates, arranged as triangles — sloping top chords, a horizontal bottom chord and diagonal webs — that spans between bearing walls to carry the roof and, usually, the ceiling; the 2021 IRC, Section R802.10 sets the rules for wood trusses, and the Structural Building Components Association represents their manufacturers.

What it is

A truss does with geometry what a rafter does with depth. Its members are small — often two-by-fours — but arranged as triangles, which cannot change shape without a member changing length, so the frame is rigid and light. The top chords carry the roof deck, the bottom chord carries the ceiling and ties the walls together, and the webs zigzag between them; galvanised plates with punched teeth are pressed into every joint in the factory. Trusses are designed by the manufacturer's engineer for the specific house from the plan, span and local loads, and arrive as a numbered set with a layout drawing.

The IRC, Section R802.10 requires wood trusses to be designed and manufactured to the national truss standard (ANSI/TPI 1), supplied with truss design drawings that show the loads, spans, bearing points and required bracing, braced as those drawings and the manufacturer's instructions require, and — the clause every remodeller learns — not cut, notched, drilled, spliced or otherwise altered without the approval of a registered design professional. Why it matters

Trusses are cheaper, faster and more predictable than site-cut rafters, span further on smaller lumber, and carry an engineer's design; that is why they frame most new houses. Their cost is the attic: the webs fill the space that rafters would leave open, so a trussed attic is storage at best, and converting it to living space means replacing or re-engineering the trusses. The other cost is fragility to good intentions — a web cut out to fit a whole-house fan, a chord notched for a duct, a bottom chord loaded with a floor of stored boxes it was never designed to carry. A single altered truss can fail a home inspection and needs an engineered repair, usually plywood gussets or added members to the engineer's sketch.

On a re-roof, trusses are out of sight and out of scope unless the deck is off and damage shows; a roof that has sagged between trusses, or a ridge line that dips, is a framing finding before it is a roofing one. Trusses are priced per set by the manufacturer from the plan, installed by the framing contractor; repairs to a damaged or altered truss are priced as an engineer's fee plus the carpentry to the engineer's drawing, and are a framer's job, not a roofer's, though a roofing crew's carpenter often does small ones while the deck is open. Truss uplift — the seasonal lifting of the bottom chord that cracks the drywall at interior walls — is a finish repair, not a structural one, and is dealt with by floating the ceiling corners.

Can I cut a roof truss to make room for an attic hatch or a fan?
No, not without a registered design professional’s approval and repair drawing. The IRC (Section R802.10) prohibits cutting, notching, drilling or altering trusses without it, because each member is carrying a designed load. A cut truss usually needs an engineered gusset repair.
Can a trussed attic be converted to living space?
Only by replacing or re-engineering the trusses, because the webs fill the space and the bottom chord is not designed as a floor. It is a structural project with an engineer, not a carpentry one.
What is truss uplift?
A seasonal movement in which the bottom chord of a truss bows upward in winter as the top chords take on moisture in a cold attic, lifting the ceiling away from interior partitions and cracking the drywall corner. It is not structural; the fix is to float the ceiling drywall at the wall rather than screw it to the truss.
